General Laborer - Grade IV

 

Characteristics of Work

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing various routine labor duties in the cleanup and maintenance of Department property.

Examples of Work

The following examples are intended only as illustrations of various types of work performed. No attempt is made to be exhaustive. Related, similar, or other logical duties are performed as assigned. The Department may require employees to perform functions beyond those contained in job descriptions. The Department may modify job descriptions based on Department needs. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is an "at will" employer.

  • Clean up Department property and right of way.
  • Paint, flag, patch, etc.
  • Mow shoulders and embankment slopes on the right of way using large tractors and gang mowers.
  • Load, unload, and stack bagged salt, sand, cement, etc.

Minimum Requirements

Ability to read and write. Ability to learn and work with simple hand tools or small power equipment.

Additional Requirements for General Laborers hired as Single Axle Truck Driver trainees

Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, and to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.  Valid driver’s license required.  Applicants for this position must obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker ("N") endorsement within 180 calendar days of hire. Successful applicants must meet the physical and mental requirements for a CDL and upon employment pass a pre-employment drug test. Failure of the drug test or to obtain the required CDL within the 180 day period will result in immediate termination. The Department is an employment-at-will organization and specifically reserves the right to terminate any employee at any time.
