TRAFFIC STOP YIELDS ILLEGAL DRUGS

LITTLE ROCK (4-1)

An officer with the Arkansas Highway Police Division of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department discovered illegal drugs in close proximity to a small child during a recent traffic stop, according to AHTD Director Dan Flowers.

On Friday afternoon, March 28, 2003, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a car occupied by two adults and one child was stopped by the officer for speeding in a construction zone on Interstate 30 near Geyer Springs Road in Little Rock.  After detecting an unusual odor on the driver, the officer was given consent to search the vehicle.  Upon checking the rear seat area, the officer found approximately two pounds of marijuana in a backpack located beside the driver’s three-year-old daughter.

The driver was identified as Mario D. Williams, age 24, of Tyler, Texas.  A passenger in the car was identified as, Reon O. Penny, age 22, also of Tyler, Texas.  Both men were arrested at the scene for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, a felony, and were booked in at the Pulaski County Detention Center.  Charges are pending on Williams for endangering the welfare of a child.

The child was released to the custody of her mother who reportedly lives in Jonesboro.
