Enhancement Program Offered by AHTD


July 16, 1997 --  The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) is now taking applications for the Arkansas Transportation Enhancement Program, according to AHTD Director Dan Flowers.

This program has been very popular throughout the state and nation since passage of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991. ISTEA contains provisions for improving the surface transportation system through development of transportation enhancements, which are defined as follows: 

1. Bicycle and pedestrian facilities
2. Acquisition of scenic easements and historic sites
3. Scenic or historic highway programs
4. Landscaping or other scenic beautification
5. Historic preservation
6. Rehabilitation and operation of historic transportation           facilities
7. Preservation of abandoned railway corridors (including
        their conversion to bicycle and pedestrian facilities)
8. Control and removal of outdoor advertising
9. Archeological planning and research
10. Mitigation of water pollution due to highway runoff
        (above and beyond normal environmental mitigation)

Applications should be received by October 31, 1997 to be considered for funding. Project applications, including general project guidelines, can be obtained from:
