Notice to MediaHighway 49 Bridge at Helena ClosedJuly 16, 1997 -- The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) has closed the Highway 49 Mississippi River Bridge at Helena due to damage caused when the bridge was struck by a barge late Tuesday, according to AHTD Director Dan Flowers. The damage occurred as the extended boom from a dredge barge being towed upstream struck the steel support beams under the bridge. It has been determined that the beams were damaged to the point that they might not adequately support the bridge deck and traffic on the bridge. The damage is currently being assessed by AHTD engineers. It is not known at this time how long the bridge will remain closed. Additional information will be provided as it becomes known. In the meantime, travelers need to make alternate travel plans. The nearest crossing to the north is I-55 at Memphis which is approximately 90 miles away. To the south, the next crossing is in the vicinity of Lake Village, Arkansas/Greenville, Mississippi, a distance of approximately 140 miles. For Further Information Contact:
