Helena Bridge to Reopen

August 1, 1997 The U. S. Highway 49 Mississippi River Bridge at Helena will reopen to vehicle traffic Monday, August 4, at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to Dan Flowers, Director of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD).

The bridge was closed July 16 after it was struck by a crane on a barge being towed upriver. It was originally estimated to take approximately six weeks to repair the damage. However, AHTD crews have worked steadily since the accident to get the repairs made in less than half that time..

The pedestrian walkway will be open to the public Monday morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. and shuttle service will be operating. Once the walkway and shuttle service are closed at 8:30 a.m., AHTD crews will begin preparing the bridge for regular vehicular traffic.

A short ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday on the bridge to signify the re-opening of the facility. Highway Commissioner J. W. "Buddy" Benafield, AHTD Director Dan Flowers, and Helena Mayor Joann Smith will take part in the ceremony and ribbon cutting.
