LITTLE ROCK (10-11) -- The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) and the I-540 Scenic Byway Partners Organization will host a series of three public meetings concerning the designation of I-540 as an Arkansas Scenic Byway, according to AHTD Director Dan Flowers. The three meetings will be held on October 18 in Fayetteville, October 19 in Mountainburg and October 26 in Fort Smith.

The I-540 Partners Organization consists of the League of Women Voters of Washington County and the Sierra Club Ozark Headwaters Group. Open forum format meetings will be held between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to allow concerned citizens the opportunity to ask questions directly to Department personnel. Written or verbal comments will be taken during this time. A formal meeting will follow beginning at 7:00 p.m. where Department personnel will make a formal presentation of the Arkansas Scenic Byway proposal. Citizens will be given the opportunity to express their views publicly if they so desire.

The first meeting will be held Monday, October 18 at Ramay Junior High, 401 South Sang in Fayetteville, followed on October 19 at the Mountainburg School Cafeteria, 129 Highway 71 in Mountainburg and on October 26 at the Creekmore Park Center at 3301 South M St. in Fort Smith.

The public meetings are being held for the purpose of permitting all interested persons, agencies, and organizations the opportunity to express their views regarding the proposed designation of I-540, from Highway 282 (Rudy Road) in Crawford County to the Highway 71 Bypass in Washington County as an Arkansas Scenic Byway. Total length of the proposed byway is 38 miles.
