Notice to MediaBella Vista Bypass Alignment Receives Final Federal ApprovalLITTLE ROCK (4-25) –
The proposed Bella Vista Bypass has moved one step closer to becoming a reality,
according to Arkansas Highway Commission member Jonathan Barnett of Siloam
Springs. A Record of Decision has been issued by the Federal
Highway Administration (FHWA) approving the alignment for the proposed bypass.
This document is the final approval needed on the selected location and paves
the way for the project to move into the design phase. “This is a big step for the project,” Barnett
commented. “The engineering and environmental studies identified the far west
alternate as the best route for the bypass. All the federal approvals are now in
place regarding that selection.” The project is a joint effort between the Arkansas
State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) and the Missouri Department
of Transportation (MoDOT). The selected alignment begins on existing U.S.
Highway 71 near Bentonville, Arkansas and proceeds west on new location to near
Hiwasse. The route then turns northward across the Missouri state line and
intersects with Highway 71 near Pineville, Missouri. The route will be designed and built as a four-lane
divided, Interstate-type highway. Total estimated cost of the 19-mile bypass is
approximately $190 million. Included in the cost of the bypass are interim
improvements along existing Highway 71 between Pineville and Bella Vista.
Interim improvements include widening the existing route to a four-lane
expressway in Missouri and intersection improvements as needed in Arkansas. “We
have applied for additional federal funding to begin the design phase,” said
AHTD Director Dan Flowers. “Future funding will dictate the pace of the
project from this point forward. We will continue to explore and pursue all
viable funding options,” Flowers added. #### For Further Information Contact:
