ARKANSAS HIGHWAY COMMISSION ANNOUNCES RECREATIONAL TRAIL PROJECT FUNDING

LITTLE ROCK (10-5) – The Arkansas State Highway Commission has authorized funding for several projects under the Arkansas Recreational Trails Programs for the upcoming year, according to Commission Chairman John "M" Lipton of Warren. Five south Arkansas projects received over $170,000 under the program.

The Bayou Bartholomew Alliance, in Pine Bluff, was awarded one of the largest dollar amounts in the state to build an interpretative trail at a cost of $96,422. Others funded projects include the following:

  • Fordyce was awarded $38,751 to construct a paved multi-use trail in the Fordyce City park.
  • Arkadelphia received $13,500 for a Ouachita River Trail along the Ouachita River.
  • The City of Crossett was awarded $12,000 to build trails within the Crossland Park Zoo.
  • A Tri-County Trail project, which proposes to make a multi-use trail from an abandoned rail corridor in Hempstead, Lafayette and Columbia Counties received $12,000.

"The Recreational Trails Program provides the opportunity for sponsors to apply for federal dollars to develop trails in their communities," said Lipton. "The Highway Commission is pleased to play a role in the development of these popular attractions."
